I love you.

I don’t know what that means
or if it’s even worth anything anymore
since it’s used to fill in the gaps between
what’s on our hearts and what’s on our minds,
to give voice the the things we have no words for,
and this may sound like an empty promise
like a lie that’s been repeated so many times
that it has to be true.

I don’t even know if you’re listening
or if you’ll ever read this,
but these are the words I wanted to say to you
in the static silence that hung in the air
before I ran out of courage
and hung up the phone.

I love you.
